While urinary incontinence can be a tough issue to contend with, one thing that you won't necessarily struggle with is having other people notice that you've had an accident. When you're dealing with accidental bowel leakage, however, an accident can be odorous to the point that other people notice and you end up highly embarrassed. If you've dealt with this problem in the past, you want to do all that you can to avoid an accident. This is especially true when you're out in public. While you could always carry sanitary products and a change of underwear when you leave the house, here are some other tips for avoiding an accident.

Stay Away From Gas-Producing Foods

You should have an idea about which foods cause you gas. For many people, common foods such as beans, turnip, cauliflower, and other similar items can result in a significant amount of gas. Although passing gas won't always lead to an accident, the reality is that if your bowels are moving air through them, it's possible for some feces to escape. Try to stay away from the foods that cause you gas, especially when you're eating away from your home. Try to constantly assess whether new foods cause this problem so that you can add them to your list of things to avoid.

Don't Push Out Gas

When you feel a little gas in your lower intestines, it can sometimes be tempting to ease it out. Perhaps you're about to go into a meeting, and you feel that pushing out the gas when no one is around is a better option than having the gas surprise you in a crowded room. However, exerting this pressure to your system can be a bad news. In addition to pushing out some gas, you might be surprised to leak some feces, too. When you feel gas, it's always better to allow it to escape naturally and without adding pressure.

Avoid Straining Yourself Physically

Some people who deal with accident bowel leakage can experience an accident when they're doing something physical, and especially when doing so at a vigorous rate. For example, if you're at the gym doing jumping jacks or skipping rope, all of the movement may lead to an accident. Try to avoid straining yourself physically too much. For example, a gentler activity such as taking a walk may leave you less at risk of an accident than jogging.
